You take the role of Will, a young Rubinelle Army cadet, who has, against all odds, survived an apocalypse. A series of meteorites have struck the planet, causing catastrophic damage, and blocking out the sun. Advance Wars games in general have genuinely been lighthearted affairs, often loaded with humor, and in general were relatively clean affairs, posing a player with a relatively clear-cut moral choice, and rarely, if ever, putting a player into a tough spot most of Black Hole's units in AW/BHR/DS, for example, are Aliens, and their COs are either Aliens themselves or working along with them. The first and most glaring difference is the plot. The end result has a number of considerable departures from what Advance War games, in general, have had, whilst at the same time, preserving much of the gameplay, and indeed, the best portions thereof. No mere facelift, and certainly not the "Advance Wars, but with new units and COs" that Black Hole Rising and Dual Strike were, Days of Ruin is a substantially new take on a franchise that had largely run aground courtesy of persistent problems with the previous games. Had you told me, back in the original Advance Wars, during Black Hole Rising, or even during Dual Strike that an Advance Wars game could have blown its predecessors this thoroughly out of the water in virtually every fashion imaginable, I would have gladly laughed, and then asked for some of what you had been smoking.Īlso known as Advance Wars: Dark Conflict over in Europe, Advance Wars: Days of Ruin treads through genuinely familiar territory for Advance Wars gamers, but in everywhere from its plot, to new units, to a wide variety of new mechanics, the game has a charm and feel all its own to it, and one that I keenly appreciate.

It was supposedly grittier, in a darker world, with none of the COs as we knew them from previous Advance Wars games. Alas, It was unavailable in my area and I found myself unable to snare a copy.įortunately, Taran did get it and as he was kind of tired of TBS games in general, he gave me his copy. This is a gift that I accept most graciously, because the game is fucking awesome. Join Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection.
